Department: Legal Services & Risk Management Union: Non-Union Position Status: Regular Full-Time Job Code: NU0018 Grade/Class: 014 Number of Positions: 1 Rate of Pay: $136,501.84 - $165,919.56 annually Hours of Work per Week: 35 hours Shift Work Required: No Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor this position will be responsible for: Providing legal services to the Corporation in all areas of the law as necessary, with an emphasis on insurance and risk; Administering the Corporation’s insurance portfolio and ensuring that the Corporation is adequately insured and/or protected; Carrying out operational aspects of the Corporation’s risk management function to reduce, control, transfer and finance risk; Consulting and negotiating with adjusters, brokers, insurers and internal and external lawyers on insurance and risk matters; Drafting reports to CAO and Council and attending Council, board or committee meetings, as required; Preparing legal opinions for the guidance of City Council and Administration; Negotiating and drafting corporate/commercial agreements; Providing additional legal services to the Corporation as may be required, which may include representation before the courts, administrative boards and tribunals; Performing Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health and Safety Program; and Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Must have a JD, LLB or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) years of broad legal experience after being called to the Bar, with emphasis on: a) personal injury and insurance law; and/or b) corporate and commercial law; Must be in and maintain good standing with the Law Society of Ontario; Must have basic knowledge of contract law and insurance law; A risk management or insurance designation would be an asset; A basic knowledge of municipal law and the Municipal Act, 2001 would be an asset; Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful driver’s license is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment; Must be fully computer literate and well versed in the MS Office suite, particularly Outlook and Word (Excel and Access skills will be considered assets); Must be able to effectively use Westlaw@Carswell and Internet resources for legal research; Must have strong interpersonal, negotiation, and verbal and written communication skills; Should have knowledge of the Occupational Hea
