Job description
CLSI is now accepting applications for an Associate Scientist position on the VESPERS beamline. The VESPERS beamline (Very Sensitive Elemental and Structural Probe Employing Radiation from a Synchrotron) is a hard X-ray microprobe beamline with X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction capabilities, providing a high level of complementary structural and analytical information.
Responsibilities:
- Training and supporting users at the beamline to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in a safe and effective manner.
- Assisting users and other beamline staff in sample preparation and data processing.
- Aligning beamline optical components and setting up the endstation for users experiments.
- Analyzing and solving routine technical problems and developing recommendations to solve difficult, complex, or unusual problems.
- Preparing beamline documentation and ensuring designs conform to CLS standards, and other relevant codes, standards and practices.
- Assisting the Beamline Responsible in the beamline upgrade/maintenance projects.
- Developing technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and equipment, either in hardware or software.
- Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
Qualifications:
- A relevant Masters or Ph.D. degree in a core science or engineering discipline is required.
- Prior experience with synchrotron-related X-ray spectroscopy or/and diffraction technique is required.
- Experience with synchrotron instrumentation would be an asset but is not required.
- Basic programming skills in Python or C/C++ is an asset.
