How to check whether a job posting is legitimate
A job listing can look convincing even when important details are missing. A few basic checks can reduce the chance of sending sensitive information to the wrong person or following an outdated application link.
Confirm the employer and the vacancy
Look for the role on the employer's own careers site when possible. Compare the title, location, reference number, closing date and application destination. Differences do not automatically mean a posting is false, but they are a reason to verify before continuing.
If Hibo shows a third-party listing, use the source link as a starting point and treat the employer or original publisher as the authority for the current vacancy.
Look closely at the application destination
- Check the domain name before entering personal information.
- Be cautious when a message asks you to move immediately to an unrelated chat account.
- Do not assume a familiar company logo proves who controls a form or email address.
- When in doubt, navigate to the employer's website independently rather than relying only on a link in a message.
Be careful with money and sensitive information
Normal hiring processes may require identity, payroll or banking details later, but the timing and destination matter. Requests for payment, gift cards, cryptocurrency, equipment purchases through an unknown intermediary or unnecessary financial information before a real hiring process are strong reasons to stop and verify.
Share only the information needed for the stage you are actually in. A resume does not need to contain highly sensitive identity numbers or banking details.
Check whether the process makes sense
Pay attention when the compensation, responsibilities and hiring process do not match each other. A vague role promising unusually high pay with no meaningful interview or qualification check deserves extra scrutiny.
Typos alone do not prove a posting is fraudulent, and a polished page does not prove it is safe. Use several signals together.
Hibo's role
