How to build a clear resume for jobs in Canada

A useful resume makes it easy for an employer to understand what you can do, where you have done it and why your experience is relevant to the role you are applying for.

Start with the information an employer needs first

Put your name and reliable contact information at the top. A short professional headline or summary can help when it adds context, but it should not repeat generic claims such as “hard-working” without evidence.

For most applicants, the core of the document is work experience, education and relevant skills. Keep the order predictable so a recruiter can scan the page quickly.

Write experience bullets around work and results

Instead of listing only duties, explain what you handled, how you handled it and what changed because of your work. Numbers can help when they are real and meaningful, but do not force a metric into every line.

  • Lead with a clear action: built, supported, coordinated, analyzed, repaired, served or managed.
  • Name the system, customer group, product or process when that context matters.
  • Include scale, frequency or outcome when you can support it.
  • Use plain language rather than copying wording from the vacancy.

Tailor the resume without rewriting your history

Tailoring means changing emphasis, not inventing experience. If a posting repeatedly asks for customer support, inventory control or a specific technical tool, move the most relevant evidence higher and use terminology that accurately matches your background.

Keep a master CV or resume containing your full history, then create focused versions for different kinds of roles. Hibo's CV builder can help you keep more than one version.

Keep formatting easy to read

A simple layout is usually safer than a design that depends on decorative columns, icons or text embedded inside images. Use consistent headings, dates and spacing. Export or print to PDF only after checking that the final page remains readable and that no text is cut off.

Before you send it

Check the employer name, job title and application instructions one more time. Remove outdated contact details, fix inconsistent dates and make sure every claim can be explained in an interview.
