We know that our greatest strengths come from the people who make up our teams.The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 22,000 citizens located half an hour south of Vancouver on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay and is known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community.OverviewThe Foreperson - Trades Mechanic is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and overseeing all municipal garage operations, ensuring the effective maintenance, repair, servicing, and lifecycle management of the City's fleet of automotive and heavy-duty equipment. This leadership role supervises garage staff, administers preventative maintenance programs, manages budgets and operational records, supports the acquisition and replacement of vehicles and equipment, and ensures compliance with safety regulations and municipal standards. The incumbent provides technical expertise, evaluates fleet performance and repair strategies, liaises with vendors and internal stakeholders, and contributes hands-on mechanical support while ensuring efficient, cost-effective, and reliable fleet operations.Qualifications Grade 12 graduation or equivalent. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the mechanical trade. Extensive Journeyman Mechanic experience, preferably involving the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy-duty equipment. Progressive supervisory or leadership experience overseeing mechanical staff and garage operations. Experience developing and administering preventative maintenance programs. Experience preparing budgets, operational reports, records, and inventory controls. Experience participating in equipment procurement, tender preparation, vendor evaluation, and contract administration. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Thorough knowledge of automotive and heavy-duty mechanical repair, maintenance, servicing, and overhaul practices. Thorough knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, procedures, and industry best practices related to fleet maintenance. Strong understanding of garage operations, applicable regulations, policies, and safety requirements. Sound knowledge of supervisory, administrative, and personnel management practices. Ability to lead and manage garage operations with minimal supervision. Ability to plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, inspect, and supervise the work of staff. Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and evaluate repair versus replacement decisions. Ability to prepare specifications, review tenders, and make recommendations regarding equipment purchases. Ability to prepare budgets, operational reports, records, and related documentation. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with employees, suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings. Ability to perform welding tasks and related mechanical work as required. Demonstrated skill in the safe use, maintenance, and care of garage tools and equipment.Requirements B.C. Certificate of Qualification (Mechanic). Valid B.C. Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement. CVI Authorized Inspector Certificate. Ability to road test vehicles and equipment as required. Ability to work safely and ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and procedures.
